Americans with Disabilities Act, Title II
Description
Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires state and local governments to ensure equal opportunity for access for individuals with disabilities in areas such as public services, employment, transportation, and telecommunications.
Accessibility includes effective communications as well as physical access. Public entities must provide necessary aids and services to support effective communication at no additional cost to the individual.
Action to be taken
- Monitor Congress – Track any statutory changes to the ADA.
- Follow DOJ rulemaking – Stay updated on new or revised regulations, including web accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1 AA standards).
- Review compliance deadlines – Note new DOJ regulation timelines for compliance.
- Update accessibility policies – Align institutional practices with current requirements.
- Train staff – Ensure IT, faculty, and administrators understand accessibility obligations.
