Federal Regulation

Accrediting experience

Description

For institutions to participate in Title IV HEA programs, the institution and in some cases the program must be accredited by a Department of Education recognized accrediting  agency that has sufficient scope and experience. The agency must accredit or preaccredit at least ten institutions or programs, with at least one having been accredited for two or more years. These requirements are intended to ensure that recognized accrediting agencies have an established track record and the credibility to serve as reliable authorities on educational quality.

Action to be taken

Institutions must verify that their accreditor is federally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order to maintain eligibility for Title IV federal student aid.
